L'Aquila Municipality The Province is a province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo of just over 300,000 residents with capital L'Aquila. It is an inner province, landlocked. It borders the province of Teramo in the north, with the Province of Pescara and Chieti Province in the east, Molise (Isernia) south-east and Lazio (Frosinone Province, Rome Province and the Province of Rieti ) to the west. Very old and interesting is the dispute if the correct name of this province is the province of L'Aquila and Aquila Province. As reported in the Royal Decree of November 23, 1939 No-XVIII 1981, the name of the town is L'Aquila and the name of the province of Aquila Province, also because this practice was commonly used to define it that way. Geography The Province of L'Aquila is, almost entirely, the mountainous part of Abruzzo. It is the only province of Abruzzi not have access to the sea and extends from north to south parallel to the coastline over an area of 5,035 km ² that, nationwide, puts it in the ninth for the extension. It is characterized by major highlands of lake origin, at which human settlements are the most consistent, close by the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga northeast of Sirente-Velino and Simbruini west, and Majella East of the Mountains and the southern half. For its size and morphological based on historical reasons, it is possible to divide the province into three main areas: * The Aterno referring to the northern part of the Province at the crossing of the river and including the high Aterno Aterno The Aquila basin, the plateau of the Rocche and the Valley Subequana; * The area of the lake at Marsica Fucino, drained at the end of the nineteenth century and representing the area's westernmost province on the border with Lazio; * Peligna Valley and the Upper Sangro at the southeast end of the province. The latter two have expressed repeatedly the desire to make itself autonomous from the Aquila territory and to create a separate provincial entity being respectively related to their main centers, Avezzano and Sulmona. Climate The entire province is located in the Apennine area and therefore characterized by a continental climate: winters are harsh with temperatures often reach negative values, the summers are very hot but not overly wet. The rainfall is abundant and, in winter, are almost always snowy in much of the province. In the basin, also there is a strong temperature during periods of high pressure. Rivers The province is considered historically rich in water, but the flow of rivers that cross even if it is considered modest regular. The main waterway of the province and the whole region, is certainly the Aterno that originated on the Monti della Laga and longitudinally through a good part of the Province, before turning towards the sea near Raiano; the Aterno through some among the most important centers in the area, including the same L'Aquila, and form through the Gorge San Venanzio the natural link between the basin of the Sulmona and L'Aquila. This town is crossed by the river instead of Sagittarius which originates in Lake Scanno, and that is the main tributary Aterno: Sagittarius also form the gorges of the same name near Anversa degli Abruzzi. At the southern boundary of the Province flows instead Sangro, the second longest river of Abruzzo, whose source is located inside the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, and through, among other countries and Alfedena Castel di Sangro. Other major rivers that originate in the province but flow predominantly elsewhere are the Liri, which originates on Simbruini, and Vomano whose source is on the Monti della Laga, not far from Aterno. Lakes In the Province of L'Aquila once stood Fucino Lake, a shallow lake, and without an exit that was considered the third largest in Italy for the extension. As a result of reclamation in the second half of the nineteenth century, was built in its place a vast network of channels for a total length of 300 kilometers. Curiously, a few years later, near Campotosto, was instead created an artificial lake that is still the region's largest and among the largest in Italy, the lake was created in order to use the water for the operation of hydroelectric Valley Vomano. Another artificial lake is that of Barry, in the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise. The main natural lake in the province is Lake Scanno, formed after a landslide in the upper valley of the river Sagittarius other lakes are Pio and San Domenico.
