City of Crotone

Crotone is a port city of 61,482 inhabitants of Calabria, capital of the province situated on a promontory overlooking the Ionian Sea. It is the fifth most populous municipality in the region behind Reggio Calabria, Catanzaro, Lamezia Terme Cosenza.

Physical Geography

The city is located on the eastern side of Calabria overlooking the Ionian Sea near the mouth of the river Esaro, the region is part of the Authority of the inter-basin of the river Esaro. The height of the city is 8 m above sea level. The municipality has an area of 179.83 km ², and has about 61,000 inhabitants. Crotone is the capital of the province since 1992.

The territory is located wholly within the Marine Protected Area of Capo Rizzuto and also to make a further supplement to this magnificent setting, is the promontory of Capo Colonna, formerly called Lacinio, who closed the city into a large basin that separates it from the Gulf of Squillace.
