Geography The Geography of the province of Reggio Calabria, on the territorial coverage of over 3,183 km ², is being marked by a great variety of local characteristics, environment and landscape, which distinguish between the various zones. The province is the southernmost of the Italian peninsula, is in fact the tip of the so-called boot and is the exact center of the Mediterranean Sea, extending from the Tyrrhenian to the Ionian Sea coast from Punta Stilo Rosarno. The Aspromonte (1,956 m) with its national park is entirely within the province. Many originate from the mountain streams and rivers, the most important are the Amendolea and Calopinace. Along the River Mint, the main tributary of the great Fiumara dell'Amendolea, has recently built a dam (dam of Mint), in the coming years should solve a problem of water supply in the municipality of Reggio. The plain is only "a chjàna" (the Plain of Gioia), south on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The territory, which includes 28% of the population of Calabria, has 97 municipalities, covers 3,184 km ² occupying 21.1% of the territory of Calabria. Climate In terms of climate the province of Reggio Calabria, full Mediterranean area, there are some anomalies in relation to the characteristics it should have, considering the location marked el maritime character. It is the high is mostly mountainous territory, which includes some basins isolated from air currents, to determine in many areas of very specific situations. The province of Reggio has two very different seasons: a wet winter and also drive, a distinctly warm and dry summer. The maritime influence, which makes its effects felt mainly along the coast, runs out as they proceed toward the inside, given the proximity of mountains to the sea. It is especially of winter that are really marked differences. While on the coasts the average in January is about 10 ° C in inland areas, on nearly half of the province, not even exceed 4 ° C, which, above 1,700 meters on Aspromonte, fall even below zero . The mountains, however, more significant influence on rainfall, so quite pronounced oppose arid coastal plains to mountainous areas inland with heavy rain frequently, especially on the Tyrrhenian coast, with rain the most abundant of the Italian peninsula, in contrast with the Ionian, very dry. In the whole area overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea in the mountains exert a decisive action to catch the currents of moist Atlantic origin. In the Coast Range and on Aspromonte touch and can even exceed 2,000 mm of annual rainfall, concentrated in the winter, make the province one of the areas with most intense fall of snow in southern Italy. On the other hand the entire eastern part, Ionic, stands between 600 and 1,000 mm annually, with values even lower in flat areas.
