Campania is a region of southern Italy. Has a population of 5,808,886 residents (08/31/2007 demo.istat.it) that put the second highest population (after California), and first for the density. Its capital is Naples.
Bordered to the west, south-west by the Tyrrhenian Sea, north-west, Lazio, Molise to the north with the north-east and east of Puglia and Basilicata.
The name derives from the Latin Campania campus, which means the country, and linguistic admixture, the term Kampanom Osco, which indicated the area near the town of Capua (Campania see (old)).
