Guide Italia - Campania
City of Salerno
Salerno (Salerno Salierno in dialect, phonetic pronunciation IPA: sa'ljernY) is an Italian city of 139,899 inhabitants, capital of the province in Campania.
She is best known for the School of Medicine, which was the first major medical institution in Europe in early Middle Ages (IX century) and as such is regarded by many as a forerunner of the modern university.
Territory

The city lies on the gulf of the Tyrrhenian Sea, between the Amalfi Coast (west) and the plain of the Sele and Cilento (south) at the point where the valley opens out towards the sea dell'Irno.
In terms of topography the territory is very varied, ranging from sea level up to the 953-foot Mt Stella. The town stretches along the coast and extends inland to the hills beyond.
The city is crossed by the river Irno, which until the middle of last century marked the eastern border and which probably derives its name. Another stream that flows into the municipal area is the river Picentino, eastern border of Salerno Pontecagnano.
