(Napule in Naples) is an Italian town of 960,349 inhabitants, capital of the province of Naples and the Campania region.

Third Italian town by population after Rome and Milan, is one of 15 Italian metropolitan city with an urban estimated between 3 and 5 million people.

It is situated almost central position on the gulf, between the Vesuvius and the volcanic area of Campi Flegrei. Its vast artistic and architectural heritage is protected by UNESCO, which in 1995 included the historic center of Naples, the largest in Europe, including sites of world heritage.

It was founded between the ninth and eighth century BC by Greek colonists, and subsequently re-established as Neapolis (¬ μ À ¿»¹ Â in greek) in the low area between the late sixth and early fifth century BC, is considered one of the major cities of Magna Graecia. During his almost three thousand years of history will see the Naples succession of long and numerous foreign domination, covering an important position in Italy and Europe.

After the Roman Empire in the seventh century, the city formed an independent duchy, independent from the Byzantine Empire, and later, from the thirteenth century and for about six hundred years was the capital of the Kingdom of Naples. From Naples, in the early fifteenth century, under Ladislaus I of Durres, left the first attempt at unification of Italy, after which the city became the political center Aragonese Empire.
