Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, Ravenna PDF Print
Guide Italia - Emilia-Romagna

Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista - Ravenna The church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Ravenna, seen near the railway station, was built by Galla Placidia, following a vow made during the trip that John the evangelist, led her to Ravenna from Constantinople in 424: given the poor condition weather, the Queen promised that if he touched down, he would build a church dedicated to John at the place of landing.

In the Middle Ages, the church became the site of a group of Benedictine monks who built beside a large monastery. In '300 the church and monastery were renewed following the Gothic style, of that address is the very interesting website. The church was stripped of its mosaics in 1747.

During the Second World War the church was bombed and later restored.
