Guide Italia - Emilia-Romagna

The Basilica of Saint Apollinaris in Classe is a basilica located about 5 km from the center of Ravenna. It was built in the first half of the sixth century, funded by Giuliano Argentario Ursicino for the bishop, was consecrated in 547 by the first archbishop Maximian and was dedicated to Sant'Apollinare, the first bishop of Ravenna.

Inside the basilica, the walls are bare, except the apse, covered with a multicolored cloak "of mosaics, dating from different periods. At the center of the basilica, the place of martyrdom of the saint, is placed an ancient altar.

In the upper register of the apse, which extends horizontally to the whole width of the arch, Christ is depicted in a circular medallion. On either side, amid a sea of stylized clouds, are the winged symbols of the Evangelists: the eagle (John), the Winged Man (Matt), Leo (Mark), the calf (Luke).
