Neoniano, Ravenna PDF Print
Guide Italia - Emilia-Romagna

The Neoniano (named after Bishop Neon, which he did to decorate the 458-dimensional) or Orthodox (to distinguish it from the next Arian Baptistery), is still next to the cathedral.

Due to the subsidence of Ravenna typical today is buried about 2 meters in the plant has an octagonal shape, has a simple exterior cladding with brick pilasters and blind arcades that date back to the original construction and were taken from northern models (see the Basilica Constantine in Trier or the Basilica of San Simpliciano in Milan).

The ceiling, floor originally was replaced by a dome (made lighter by clay pipes) to the 458 by Bishop Neon, which he also provide the mosaic decoration. In particular, on the ceiling within three concentric rings are represented various parties:

1. The outer ring, a blue background, presents a series of tripartite fake architecture, creating an effect of alternation of concave and convex at the center of the niches is the altar for the Mass or empty throne with the insignia of Christ (the etimasia ).
2. The second level is the most interesting and presents the twelve apostles on a blue background, with her dress (robe and cloak) alternating in white and gold, with crowns in their hands to offer to Christ. The images are still of considerable plastic consistency and a sense of movement, which testify to the unbroken relationship with the Roman environment, while index relations with the Byzantine world are brightly colored, the monumentality and solemnity of figures. The apostles do not have halo (only cloth drapes covering the head) and are interspersed with candelabra, symbolizing the Passion of Christ.
3. In the central medallion on a gold background, is the scene of Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist in the act of administering the sacrament to Christ immersed to the waist in the Jordan River also appears a personification right, underlined by the writing Iordan ( the Jordan River), while Christ stands above the dove of the Holy Spirit. The faces of Jesus and John the Baptist was rebuilt in the eighteenth century, for which the central part of the scene, the outline clearly visible, is no longer the original one.

The walls of the baptistery have a magnificent stucco decorations, frescoes, mosaics and polychrome marble, which has no other points of comparison for this period
