Guide Italia - Liguria

City of Imperia

Imperia is a town of 42,319 inhabitants of Liguria, capital of the province. Despite being overtaken by population communal Sanremo, Imperia is the fourth largest urban reality after Genoa Liguria, La Spezia and Savona, with an urban agglomeration of over 71,000 inhabitants, which embodies the coast until the Aregai, the Gulf of Diano Marina, and the average Valley Empire.
Located on the Riviera dei Fiori, was formed in 1923 at the behest of Mussolini, the union of eleven surrounding municipalities, the two largest of which were Oneglia and Porto Maurizio. The city is known for the strong and historic settlement of farms and food industries (especially oil producers, but also pasta) but was in time converted to an economy based mainly on services (being capital of the province) and tries to create work Tourism (thanks to the sea and mild climate, even during winter).
The dialect is the main language of Imperia in Liguria, with a slight but perceptible variations in terminology and pronunciation between the districts of Porto Maurizio (more like all'intemelio) and Oneglia, where the old Piedmontese domination has left its mark even in the cadence and vocabulary .
Since the sixties, with the spread of internal migration (mainly from Southern Italy), the use of dialect was the first "watered down" with a lot of Italian terms, then it is much reduced, remain confined in the city, between the older population. However, it remains still used in small villages, where traditions of the past are more alive.
