Etymology

In the past Cagliari was called from the Phoenician-Punic Krly while Latin was Caralis or plural or Calares Karales. During the time Giudicale the center of the city became what is now the neighborhood of Santa Gilla and medieval Sardo was therefore called "Santa Igia. With the arrival of Pisa Pisani was identified in documents as Kastrum Karalis and later by the Aragonese as Castel de Caller old Catalan. Then the affirmation of Castilian Spanish rule during the name became Callari and finally during the Savoy name was simply transliterated in getting the current Italian Cagliari. In the Sardinian language Casteddu is the actual name of the city from the identification with the city's fortified castle built during the rule of Pisa.

Around the sixteenth century Roderigo Hunn Baeza, a humanist Sardinian Karalis said that derive from the greek º ¬ Á ± which means head, as Cagliari was the main center of the island. The Semitic William Gesenius derives the name made by Kar Baalis, which in Phoenician means "city of God." This was offset, though with some differences, which was accepted by John Spano, indeed, he argued that Cagliari is derived from the Phoenician name Kar-El, which also means "city of God."

Max Leopold Wagner said the deadline back to proto-Karalis, are reflected by the names of Carale Austis, Carallai of Sorradile, or Karhalis Karhallis Pamphylia and the Karhalleia Pisfidia. Karalis is also the name to be connected with such names cacarallai, criallei, crielle, chirelle, Ghirelli (wild chrysanthemum Macerone) and garuleu, galureu, Galileu (pollen stored in honey, which is yellow gold), which have affinities with 'Etruscan garouleou (wild chrysanthemum). All these terms can be traced to travelers of the nineteenth century that defined Cagliari "yellow" because of his rock fortress was this color.

Francesco Artizzu noticed that the root "kar" in the language of the Mediterranean peoples meant "stone / rock" and the suffix "al / ar" gave collective value, and would thus Karali format, which means "place of community on the rock" or simply "rocky place". As for the plural Kalares, Artizzu explained by the fact that, from an initial nucleus, would join other neighboring nuclei, thus increasing the extension of the city. In conclusion, most likely originally Karalis / Caralis had the meaning of 'place on the rock community / yellow or white rock. "
