Municipality of CataniaFounded in 729 BC by the Greeks Calcidesi, has a long history characterized by various rulers whose remains now enrich the cultural and architectural heritage. Throughout its history has been repeatedly destroyed by volcanic eruptions (the most impressive in historical times, is that of 1669) and earthquakes (the most catastrophic remember were those of 1169 and 1693). The baroque old town was declared a world heritage site, with seven municipalities in the Val di Noto (Caltagirone, Militello Val di Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli) in 2002. Catania is one of the few cities in Italy to offer such diverse landscapes concentrated in a single site. It rises on the east coast, at the foot of Mount Etna (the highest in Europe) and halfway between the cities of Messina and Syracuse. Its territory includes a large portion of the plain of Catania and all Calatino. The plain of Catania ('a Chiana) is one of the largest growing areas of Sicily and its area nearest the sea is the oasis of Simeto, regional reserve of 2,000 hectares was established in 1984. The reserve is named after the river Simeto Simeto, the largest island, which flows south of the city. Catania, overlooking the Ionian Sea with the Gulf, which takes its name. Also around the volcano lies another famous nature conservation area, that of the Etna Park. The land is typically flat to the south and southeast, and mountains to the north to the volcano Etna. The original core of the city was situated on a hill that is today's Piazza Dante, where there is the former Benedictine monastery. The only other major important is the hill Santa Sofia, where the University Campus is located on the border with Gravina, municipality of the vast hinterland. The public park is located within the city parks. Six are those of a certain size and importance: the Garden Bellini, called 'Villa or Villa Bellini, and dedicated to Vincenzo Bellini, Pacini Garden, called Villa' ê varagghi (ie "of yawns," because it was said to be especially popular pensioners and idlers in general), Gioeni Park (located on the north end of the street Etnea), Falcone and Borsellino Park (north of Italy Course), The Viceroy Park (in the district Canalicchio barrier) and the Grove Plaia (the area between the airport and the city Vincenzo Bellini). Among others, for its historical importance and the conservation of biodiversity, reports the Botanical Garden of Catania. The city is crossed by an underground river, "Amen. In the past, just outside the walls to the west, you could find the lake Nicito, connected to the river and now covered by lava flow of 1669 (via the eponymous remember the location). Currently, the amen is made visible to linzolu Water, a white marble fountain that stands between the Fish and the Piazza del Duomo and in the basements of local Agora Hostel. But it was all the surrounding areas to change profoundly as a result of natural disasters such as this: the coast north of the port is just sort of a cliff as a result of various lava flows in the historical period in 1169, 1329 and 1381, when it was Porto also covered part of the ancient Ulysses, and this stretch of coast is called the bluff and just include the beach of San Giovanni Li Cuti. The area south of the Castello Ursino, a time above the sea, is instead the product of the enormous cast of 1669 accerchiatolo that went for a few kilometers to the sea. The coast south of the port was reworked to form the present coastline (the Plaia) that is rather sandy.
