Municipality of Palermo Palermo (Palermu in Sicilian) is an Italian town of 656,256 inhabitants, capital of the province of Palermo and the Sicilian Region. It is the seat of the Sicilian Regional. Fifth Italian town by population after Rome, Milan, Naples and Turin, and the thirty-first in Europe, is the main cultural, historical, economic and administrative center of Sicily. Palermo is one of 15 Italian metropolitan city. The whole history gave her a great artistic and architectural heritage that ranges from the remains of walls to reach the Punic Art Nouveau villas, from residences in Arab-Norman style, neoclassic baroque churches and theaters. For reasons of cultural, artistic and economic was one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean and today is among the top tourist destinations in the region, nation and Europe. Territory The Palermo area was originally a large plain cut by many rivers and streams and swampy areas now reclaimed land surrounded by high mountains whose peaks are often covered by snow during the winter season. The plain of Palermo overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, and together with the mountains behind him as the Conca d'Oro. The layout of the town stretches along the coast, with little penetration inland. The rivers that flow there are missing or still under terra.Il territory of Palermo can be divided into several landscaped areas each with distinctive features the result of a historical relationship between people and the natural environment. * Setting Sferracavallo - Thomas Christmas is bordered by ridges of Monte Gallo and Pizzo Manolfo part of the massif of Mount Billiemi. This area includes the coastal landscape, grassland and scrubland and urban villages of Sferracavallo represented by Thomas and Christmas. * Setting Addaura: extends along the rocky coast east of Monte Pellegrino, a shift from an environment typically range in a marine environment. Inside the caves are dell'Addaura, popular since prehistoric times. * Setting Piana dei Colli: sub-area level home today from the northern part of the city, surrounded by the Monti di Palermo and headlands of the mountains and Gallo Pellegrino. The flat was once occupied by the system of historic villas, gardens and the cultivated areas relevant to these. * Setting-Ciaculli Brancaccio: this is the area south of the city. A large agricultural area located between the coast and the mountains of Palermo inside the park contains what remains of Favara, a former Norman resident. The agricultural landscape structure are combined so the coastal system, to the mountain and river scenery of the river Oreto with its system of Mills. Orography The rock formations that surround and cut in various parts of the city of Palermo are mainly limestone and their arrangement on the territory did not allow a regular development of the city, in some cases, the mountains are found along the coastline, creating a real physical split between some neighborhoods. The rest of the mountains of Palermo, however, limits the extension of the city towards the inland. Among these mountains are some large valleys such as the Plain of the Hills in the north of the city, the Valley dell'Oreto south, and the Conca d'Oro in the hinterland. Hydrography The hydrography of the plain of Palermo has radically changed during the course of history. The first settlement was built between two rivers now no longer visible, and the Kemonia Papireto, while the river Oreto was well beyond the line of the city walls. The two rivers that cut the city now no longer flow to the surface, but in the basement of the historic center are evident in place names and their traces in the shape of the streets. Area currently occupied by the city in addition to the three main rivers were many seasonal streams, which helped to create wetlands or other water-rich: the case of the San Lorenzo area and the area of Mondello. The only river to flow between the streets today is the Oreto. Climate According to the Köppen classification of climates, the climate of Palermo belongs to the group called CSA: mid-latitude temperate climate with hot dry summer and cool and rainy winter (Mediterranean climate). The seasons are mild and pleasant temperatures. Summer is hot and dry but windy and hot (ie with indices of high humidity) but it is easy to hear the south wind, the wind is African, although in rare cases, he boosted the maximum temperatures over 42 ° C (historical record of 45.5 º registered Astronomical Observatory of Palermo).
