alt Comune di Siena

Siena is a town of 54,391 inhabitants in central Tuscany, capital of the province.
The city is universally known for its artistic heritage and for the substantial stylistic unity of its medieval street furniture, as well as for its famous Palio, the center has in fact been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995
The emblem of Siena is known as "sock." It is a shield divided into two horizontal sections: the upper one is white, the black bottom with the she-wolf suckling Senio and Ascanio. According to legend, would symbolize the black and white smoke emerged from the pyre wishing that the legendary founders of the city, Senio and Ascanio, sons of Remus, were lit to thank the gods after the founding of the city of Siena. Another legend relates that the sock is derived from the colors of horses, one white and one black, Senio and Ascanio used in the escape from his uncle who wanted to kill Romulus and with whom they came to Siena.
For their alleged fiery character who, they say, borders on insanity, even the Sienese are often referred to as "Balzan".
