The University of Perugia is one of the leading and oldest Italian universities.

It was one of the first free universities sprang up in Italy, built in the Studium Generale September 8, 1308, as evidenced by the papal bull "Super Specula" of Clement V. An 'arts education institution of medicine and the law still existed from the beginning of 1200, primarily funded by the city of Perugia. Prior to 1300, attests to the presence of different universitates scholarium. The famous jurist James of civil Belviso taught there from 1316 to 1324. The first of August 1318 Pope John XXII gave the University the right to confer degrees in civil and canon law, and February 18, 1328 in medicine and the arts. On May 19, 1355 Emperor Charles IV issued an edict to strengthen the papal bulls and raise the rank of Imperial University, to foster the rebirth of the city after the waves pestilential the years 1348-49. Was founded in 1362 by Cardinal Nicholas Capocci Gregorianum the Collegium (later renamed Old Wisdom), which when established could accommodate up to 40 young people. Visiting the city on October 11, 1371, Gregory XI raised the fledgling faculty of theology at the Studium Generale. This power was abolished and its property handed over to the university in 1811. Was born in 1426 at the initiative of Guidalotti Benedict, Bishop of Recanati, and with the approval of Martin V, the College of San Girolamo. Later renamed Sapienza new, it was a free hostel for foreign students who could not pay his studies, and merged with the university in 1829. With the papal restoration (1814-1860) the Sapienza New Pius VII was reopened under the name of Pius College and 27 August 1824 Leo XII made it the main university college. During the Jacobin republic, in 1798, the University changed the site following the expropriation of the old Convent of Monte Olivetano Morcino, where he established his residence, which has remained unchanged to this day.
