Stuart Gallenga Palace, Perugia PDF Print
Guide Italia - Umbria

ll Palace Gallenga Stuart, formerly Palazzo Antinori, (XVIII century) is located in Piazza Fortinbras 4, Perugia, and is home to the headquarters of the Italian University for Foreigners

The baroque palace was built by Giuseppe Antinori, to become home of the noble family of Antinori Perugia. In 1720 a young Carlo Goldoni, residing in the town following the father's physician, performed here - in the vicinity of today's Goldoni Room - his first performance [1]. The facade is characterized by blocks of large windows, cornices and brick pillars, was built by Pietro Carattoli between 1748 and 1758, designed by the Roman architect Francesco Bianchi.

In 1875 the Palace was purchased by Stuart Gallenga Romeo and assumed its present name. In 1926 the Count Gallenga Stuart gave the palace to the city of Perugia, and in 1927 the Palace became the seat home of the University for Foreigners in Perugia. In 1931, a wealthy American student, Frederick Thorne Rider, who later became an honorary citizen of Perugia, bestowed a substantial donation to the University, which allows for the rear façade and a new wing of the building.
