Arco Etrusco, Perugia PDF Print
Guide Italia - Umbria

The Etruscan Arch or Augustus is one of seven gates in the walls of Etruscan Perugia. It was built in the second half of the third century BC and was restored by Augustus made in 40 BC after his victory in the war of Perugia. Is the most integral and monumental Etruscan towns and ports open on the cardo maximus of the city, corresponding to the current via Ulisse Rocchi.

The arch consists of a front crossed by a single tube (ie a single span) and two trapezoidal towers. Above the arch (two concentric rows) there is a frieze of metopes decorated with round shields and triglyphs, above this there is another arc between two pillars.

The internal row we can read the writing Perusia Augusta, the name of the city after the reconstruction of 40, in the external row is the inscription Colonia Vibia, to witness the "ius coloniae" received from Treboniano Gallo.

The loggia on the left tower was added in the sixteenth century, while the fountain at the foot of the tower itself was finished building in 1621.

In front of the bow rises Palazzo Gallenga Stuart, home of the University for Foreigners.
