| Guide Italia - Valle d'Aosta | |
City of Aosta The Valle d'Aosta / Vallée d'Aoste (official name, in French Vallée d'Aoste, Valle d'Aosta Val d'Août in patois, language Ougschtaland Walser) is a region with special status in north-western town Aosta. The Aosta Valley is part of the Alps-Mediterranean. It is bordered to the north by Switzerland (district of Entremont in the canton of Valais), on the west by France (departments of Haute Savoie and Savoie in the Rhone-Alpes region), south and east with Piedmont (Turin Province, Province Biella, Vercelli Province). It is the smallest region of Italy (3263 km ²) and also the least populated (126,660 inhabitants). Geography The Valle d'Aosta is the smallest Italian region and is located in the heart of the Alps, surrounded by four of the highest mountains of Italy and Europe (Monte Bianco, Cervino, Monte Rosa and Gran Paradiso). The region is almost entirely mountainous and is collected around the valley formed by the Dora Baltea. The most important passes are the Piccolo San Bernardo and the Colle del Gran San Bernardo, which corresponds to the tunnel of the same name. The southern part of the territory is occupied by the Gran Paradiso National Park (Parc National du Grand Paradis), established in 1922 to protect certain species of flora and fauna in danger of extinction as ibex, chamois, marmots and ermine. The valleys were carved by glaciers in motion, these once covered the entire region. Now the glaciers occupy only the highest peaks. Climate The climate of the Valle d'Aosta is typically alpine with cold winters and cool summers. Only the central valley crossed by the Dora Baltea enjoys milder weather conditions. During winter, heavy snow fall, but the rainfall is generally scarce in the rest of the year. To work around this fact have been built since the early Middle Ages, great works of irrigation channel called Rus (pronounced "ru", even in the plural) are still used. The Valle d'Aosta has a mountain uniform: in fact it reflects the morphology of its territory entirely mountainous, with valleys filled with forests, which are useful to humidify and cool the climate. The major form factors are in fact two: the mountain range that spread throughout the region and the large number of glaciers and forests, which cool the climate. When winter is formed an area of low pressure Aosta, the area around Courmayeur is hit by an intense cold, the bringer of rain and snow at low altitudes, down to the valley, especially in some inland areas. The summer is cool and quite windy. Inland the climate is harsh, with average winter very low, especially in some valleys of the north-west of the region (daily average in January of -11.9 ° C in Courmayeur, -12.9 ° C Breuil , -10.9 ° C in Aosta). The mean minimum of these locations are between -10 and -12 ° C, the minimum expected seasonal, during the winter, are around -15 ° C even though the night temperatures can drop well below this value during the most intense periods of frost, the summer days are very fresh, and the daily averages during the summer term are influenced by glaciers and the daily temperature and wind rather cold night temperatures.
