City of Venice Venice is a city of 271,009 inhabitants of north-eastern capital of the Veneto region and of the province. It was also more than a millennium capital of the Republic of Venice and in this respect known as "La Serenissima" or "dominant." For the peculiarities of urban planning and for the priceless treasures of artistic, Venice is universally considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world and ranks among the UNESCO World Heritage by UNESCO: this factor has helped make it the second Italian city after Rome with the largest flow of tourists, mostly from abroad. The territory stretches over much of the Lagoon of Venice, but also on the surrounding land, including the greater metropolitan area that has as its center Mestre. Geography As already mentioned, the first core of the city, ergo, the old town, consists of a set of islands situated in the middle of the lagoon of Venice on the Adriatic coast north-western (Gulf of Venice), for a total of 60,053 inhabitants. These are joined by most of the islands of the estuary (30,295 inhabitants) and the mainland (180,661) with its extension of 130.03 km ², representing 83% of emerged land surfaces. The old town has always been isolated from the mainland (which has repeatedly been an effective defensive system) until 1846, when the railway bridge was completed, followed up in 1933, the Liberty Bridge, opened to traffic road along 4 km from Mestre to Piazzale Roma. It is about 37 km from Treviso and 40 km from Padua. Climate The climate is typical of Venice in the Po Valley, mitigated by the proximity to the sea in winter minimum temperatures (3 ° C on average) and highest in summer (24 ° C on average). It can be considered a climate of transition between the continental and Mediterranean. The rainfall reaches its peak in spring and autumn and summer thunderstorms are frequent. In winter, snowfalls are not uncommon (but usually the snow tends to melt quickly), but often freezes at night, which also involves the lagoon waters of the inland areas. The high humidity can cause fog in cold months in hot and sultry. The main winds are the Bora (NE) dominant in winter and spring, the Sirocco (SE) in summer and, less frequently, Libeccio (SW, known locally Garbin). Environment Air pollution is a problem well known and includes the entire area of the Po valley, although it is virtually no vehicular traffic in the historic city there are the same levels of PM10, which are recorded on land. The petrochemical complex of Marghera generates an emission of pollutants into air and water of the lagoon. A recent survey found the number for a variety of substances emitted into the atmosphere by sector of activity, we read that in one year (1999 data) are emitted 23,000 tons of nitrogen oxides, 27,000 tons of sulfur dioxide, 1500 tons of suspended particles and even metals such as 9 t iron, 3 t. copper, 1, 5 t. lead and so on. If at first, at the beginning of '900, the industrial center was seen as a source of progress and economic welfare over the decades the population has grown increasingly critical attitude, to culminate in the famous and troubled , mega petrochemical process that has seen the face each other as part of civilian workers and family workers in the petrochemical, civil authorities (among them the Veneto Region, the Province and the Municipality of Venice together with the Presidency of the Council and the Ministry of Environment) environmental groups and trade unions against twenty-eight defendants and civil leaders of the major chemical companies (Edison, Enichem, Eni and Montefibre), the process ended in May 2006 with the ruling of the Supreme Court. The Philippine clam (Tapes philippinarum), different from the Italian clam (Tapes decussatus), called in Venetian caparòssoBo, introduced in the Mediterranean in the seventies and recently spread in the lagoon, has influenced the traditional forms of fishing, fishing for juvenile fish and fishing of moBéca; moBéca the crab is in a stage of development (ie, during the change of the set) where there are no hard parts and is completely soft, is a delicacy and its fisheries, is now accomplished by a few, shall be satisfied by a Technical unchanged for centuries, handed down from father to son, and that requires a decade for the formation of the fisherman. In recent years there have been incidents of crime linked to illegal fishing of clams in polluted soils
